In 1983 Geoffrey Cobb visited the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and knew right away that variety entertaining was his calling. He returned home to Michigan and became involved in the renaissance festival there. He learned to juggle and be comfortable in front of an audience, and then in 1986 it was off to Ringling Bros, Barnum & Bailey Clown College.
After Clown College, Geoffrey performed as a clown with the Clyde Beatty & Cole Bros. Circus for the 1987&1988 seasons, where he meet Mike Schneider, who taught him to swallow swords and perform his “block head” routine. Tried of the grind of circus life, 1989 saw Geoffrey back in Michigan working a “real job” in the “real world”, while putting together his sword swallowing show.
That same year Geoffrey created his alter ego Thom Sellectomy and debuted his sword swallowing show in the lanes of the Michigan Renaissance Festival.
In 1991 Geoffrey took the show on the road and since has performed annually at over a dozen different Renaissance Festivals and Fairs across North America, including a 14-year run at the Arizona Renaissance Festival.
In 1996 Geoffrey headed north to Canada to perform at Street Performer and Busking Festivals, this proved to be a pivotal moment in the development of the show. As this is when Geoffrey stopped trying to be a “dashing and dangerous” type of character, and settled into his own character, a very approachable, reluctant every man. This “clown” character helped to make the show easier to watch and broadened its appeal.
1997 through 2001 saw Geoffrey touring a full “season” of five renaissance festivals a year. Starting each year at the Arizona festival in February and finishing 9 months later in North Carolina.
In late 2004 Geoffrey decided that it was time to explore other venues, and so in 2005 Geoffrey began to perform on cruise ships and traveled to Australia for a successful tour of clubs and festivals.
Geoffrey met Kenny Glen of Game Operations International in 2006 and began performing at NBA halftimes under the name Cold Steel. The Cold Steel shows are completely different from the Thom Sellectomy shows. Instead of being a comedy show, the sword swallowing is set to music and is shown on the jumbotron.
It was thru this connection that Geoffrey ended up in Iceland as part of the Extreme Team show, an extravaganza of North America's biggest sports event halftime shows. Geoffrey served as the opening comedy act for the stunt show, and rocked a sold out 5500 seat arena, his biggest audience for a comedy show to date.
Also in 2006 Geoffrey teamed up with David Aiken aka The Checker Board Guy, one of Canada's premier variety performers, to create and tour a new variety show; The Juggling Sherpas!
New Years of 2006/2007 found the Thom Sellectomy show back Down Under for the Taste of Tasmania in Hobart. This trip also included a successful run as part of a cabaret show at the Peacock Theater.
Geoffrey/Thom now spends time performing at a variety of venues and events world wide; from street festivals to corporate events, and on cruise ships and in theaters.
